The aunt of the notorious Menendez brothers has broken her silence, offering up spine-chilling insights linked to a particular element of their story showcased in the Netflix documentary.

"Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" brings to light the horrific 1989 slaying of parents Jose and Kitty Menendez by their children Lyle and Erik.

The series delves into the subsequent murder trials that resulted in a life sentence for the siblings who, during the proceedings, alleged they were sexually abused by their father and killed him in self-defense.

A particularly graphic episode on Netflix dedicates an intense 30-minute scene where actor Cooper Koch, portraying Erik Menendez, recounts the claimed abuse.

One of Erik's distressing statements suggesting he seasoned his meals with citrus to "taste better" amidst the attacks is depicted with excruciating attention to detail, reports the Express .

Joan VanderMolen, the sister of Kitty Menendez, has recently weighed in on her nephews' allegations of abuse in an interview with Vanity Fair following her appearance in the documentary discussed by the Mirror.

She described a memory from a family trip to Texas , recalling: "We had a table that fit all of us, and Erik simply refused to eat unless he had lemon. And my dad could not fathom what the problem was. No matter what my dad did or said it didn't change."

Adding more context to Erik's peculiar behavior, she disclosed: "He had to have lemon. And it turns out that he was being assaulted by his dad."

Erik's aunt, Joan, disclosed some heartrending details about his current habits, related to his traumatic past, when she spoke out: "And to this day Erik has to have his lemon. That was so ingrained in him. He couldn't enjoy a meal without his lemon because of the assaults. You don't get over something like that. He still needs lemon with his meals. It's a habit now."

Moreover, Joan shared allegations concerning her daughter trying to speak with Kitty about the abuse, only to be disbelieved, and how their own brother remained unsupportive post-conviction.

The situation surrounding the evidence in the Menendez brothers' second murder trial also drew comments from Joan: "Everything their lawyer said was shut dry down. [Leslie Abramson] couldn't get anything [admitted into evidence]. It was like the abuse never happened. It wasn't fair at all. I don't know how the jury reached a verdict after a trial so nuts."

She finished with a declaration of familial affection and hope for the future: "I-we, the family-love Erik and Lyle. I hope our support gets them where they should be, and that's not in prison."
