LIV Golf's Sergio Garcia unfazed by LIV Golf's biggest issue with OWGR rankings

Sergio Garcia, the LIV Golf star, has dismissed the significance of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), suggesting that a continuous drop in ranking is no longer a concern for him.

Since its establishment in June 2022, the lack of OWGR accreditation has been a significant weakness for the breakaway league in its competition with the PGA Tour . This means that LIV Golf events are still taking place without world ranking points being awarded, resulting in their marquee players slipping down the rankings.

Garcia, captain of the Fireballs, has been one of the most affected by this , currently languishing in 395th place, a far cry from his previous highs as the world's second-best ranked player.

Initially, this was a major worry for Garcia and his colleagues, but it seems the former Masters champion has grown indifferent to the situation, reports the Mirror US .

"To be totally honest, I don't think world ranking points are worth it anymore for us," the ex-PGA Tour star told GolfMagic. "Even if we got world ranking points now with the rankings we have like myself down in 390th, it just wouldn't really help the majority of us. We were looking at it and for someone to be able to stay in the top 50 in the world, you would probably have to win like 10 of the 14 tournaments on LIV Golf."

Many golfers have previously worried about dropping down the rankings and missing out on securing entries into the four grand slams, but those concerns seem outdated with the Official World Golf Ranking's (OWGR) credibility waning and the majors showing signs of accommodating other qualification methods.

Sergio Garcia spoke optimistically about alternative paths to major tournaments, mentioning: "Other options are being talked about at the moment and hopefully, they come around in the very near future," and adding, "I think at the end of the day the governing bodies that run the majors want to have the best players in the world and a lot of the guys are on the league with us, so they are going to have to figure something out to have the best players there."

The year 2024 illustrated this change when LIV Golf standout Joaquin Niemann received an invitation to The Masters based on his strong early-season performance. Moreover, Niemann was among seven LIV Golf members granted entry to the PGA Championship.

Patrick Reed, a past Masters winner, Talor Gooch, the LIV 2023 champion, and other notable players including Louis Oosthuizen, Dean Burmester, Lucas Herbert, Adrian Meronk, and David Puig were extended invites to challenge at Valhalla for the season's second major tournament.
