A Liam Neeson thriller that has been dubbed the ‘Irish Avengers’ has Netflix viewers hooked with it's gripping plotline .

In The Land Of Saints And Sinners got its premiere at the Venice Film Festival last year before being added to Netflix earlier this year. The movie stars an array of big-name Irish acting stars including Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) Ciarán Hinds ( Belfast ), Colm Meaney, Jack Gleeson and Sarah Greene.

Directed by Robert Lorenz the movie tells the story of Neeson's character Finbar Murphy living in a remote Irish coastal town during the 1970s.

Finbar is trying to leave his dark past behind him but when a group of terrorists arrive in town led by a ferocious and smart woman named Doirean (Condon) he find himself dragged into a series of violent acts as he is forced to choose between exposing his past and defending his friends. Gleeson was a notable cast member who you may recognise from his role as Joffrey Baratheon in Game of Thrones where his character saw him become one of the key cast members.

Gleeson previously announced he was retiring from acting ten years ago after admitting he had lost "passion" for his career. However, his performance in In the Land of Saints and Sinners makes it clear he found it again along the way.

Meaney spoke to JOE last year about the film admitting he had “high hopes” for it. He said: “Very good script. It’s got Liam [Neeson], it’s got Kerry Condon – my favourite woman in the world – Ciarán Hinds. It’s a great cast and a great script, so yeah, fingers crossed. High hopes for it.”

He has not been left disappointed with the film scoring an impressive 83 per cent on movie critique site Rotten Tomatoes.

One fan wrote: "Nice to see Liam Neeson in an original Irish-based film with some great fellow Irish actors (friends), with a down to earth IRA based drama. Each actor brings their character to the screen throughout this 70’s themed story.

"The director brings out the beauty of the Northern Irish countryside alongside the remote villages/houses down the remote roads and lanes. The script was on the whole very good and extremely well delivered by the many stars, however, be prepared for a few F-Bombs. Nice to see a non-special effects film (well for most of the film anyway)."

Another added: "Great cast! Great movie! 'In the Land of Saints and Sinners' is a film I enjoyed, in fact I don't have any complaints with it at all. It features a very interesting story, one that left me engrossed from beginning to end. The tension is built well, while it's easy to care about the characters that appear. It's also wonderfully shot and holds a lovely score.

"Liam Neeson puts in a top performance, he is undoubtedly a terrific actor. He is matched onscreen by Kerry Condon, who portrays her character tremendously. Many a familar face appear elsewhere, most notably Ciarán Hinds and Colm Meaney. Good, too, to see Jack Gleeson, who I thought retired after his stint on television but he is seemingly back in the game - and rightly so, a very talented actor. Undoubtedly worth your time. I'd more than happily revisit this one."

In the Land of Saints and Sinners is available to watch on Netflix now.
