Cynthia Ervio hits out at fan-made Wicked poster blasting it as 'offensive' - but is told to 'grow up'

The campaign for the upcoming film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical has hit a bump in the yellow brick road. Musical icon Cynthia Ervio has publicly criticized a fan-made Wicked poster that shades her face, calling it "deeply hurtful."

The circulating image was a recreation that was more similar to the theatrical Wicked poster, sparking controversy. After the photoshopped poster dropped, it revealed Ervio's witch hat covering her eyes and her lips painted red to match the Broadway one. Ariana Grande , cast as Glinda in the movie, has her hand repositioned to cover her face and nose.

While the film poster had minor tweaks to the long-standing theater poster, Ervio said she found the alterations the "wildest, most offensive thing I have seen.”

Ervio took to Instagram to share her feelings. In her story post, she said the changes "degrade" and "erase" her involvement in the project .

“Our poster is an homage, not an imitation," the lead actress explained , noting that the original poster is an illustration.

Other cast members and loyal fans were quick to support Ervio's call-out. The film's director, Jon M. Chu, reshared Ervio's post and wrote, "My super-hero."

But not everyone was convinced by the argument. Online discussion about the incident seemed to be roundly against the star.

One X user wrote: "Good morning to everyone, except Cynthia Erivo, for having the nerve to open a burner account to say that people editing a poster of an already liked and established franchise before her inclusion in it is hurtful and racially motivated."

Another wrote: "The Earth is being thrown off its axis from the force of everybody rolling their eyes at Cynthia Erivo at the same time."

Another said: "Imagine thinking fans editing a bad Wicked movie poster to be more like the Broadway poster is 'THE MOST OFFENSIVE THING EVER SEEN'… in an election season… as we face wars… This Cynthia Erivo is an insufferable idiot. Get over yourself girl before you tank your own movie."

"Seriously? This is what you want to whine about?" another said. "People recreating the original Broadway poster? You're 37 years old. Grow up."

Until now, I’ve always seen the “Wicked” images with the wicked witch’s eyes covered by her hat. Some people seem to look for things just so they can cry “offended” and try to be a victim thus for attention.
