‘My husband’s Irish family pronounces our son’s name differently - am I saying it wrong?’

A woman is now second guessing the pronunciation of her son’s name. She shared her dilemma on Reddit, seeking advice on the name blunder.

Irish names can be difficult to pronounce, especially among those who don’t know the language . It can be embarrassing, and sometimes hilarious, when a person butchers an Irish name .

The mother posted in the r/CasualIreland Reddit thread that she is worried that she’s mispronouncing her son’s name.

She explained that her husband is Irish, from Co Kerry , while she is from Canada. They have twins, and one of them is named Ruairí.

The name means “Red King.” Her and husband pronounce the name like “Rur-ee,” while the husband’s Irish family pronounces the name differently.

“The problem I am having is what we thought the pronunciation was doesn't seem to be what people say. We live in England so they are going to be unreliable at pronouncing Ruairí properly…”

She wonders if it changes depending on what county you'rer from as well. The user said even some Irish people have said it differently than others from Ireland.

One person in the comments put it simply: “It rhymes with ‘jury’ if that helps.”

Another said: “If you’re pronouncing it Rory, then yes it’s wrong. It’s Roo-ree. I add in like a half ‘a’ sound in the middle as well, almost Roo-a-ree. But the ‘a’ sound is very short and you could almost miss it.”

Someone reassured them that different accents and dialects may make the name sound different, so she shouldn’t get too hung up on it.
