Montana police believe far worse after friend finds man dead from alleged bear attack

A man recently found his friend’s body and assumed he had been attacked by a bear , only to realize it was far worse than that.

Dustin Kjersem hopped in his black F-150 and headed to a remote campsite out in the wilderness of Montana on October 10—the last time anyone would ever hear from him.

Kjersem made plans to meet with the friend the following day for a weekend of camping and other excursions; however, when he didn’t show up as expected, Kjersem’s friend went looking for him when he happened upon a disturbing discovery .

On Saturday morning, the friend phoned 911 to alert authorities that he had found Kjersem’s bloody body in a tent roughly two and a half miles up the road from the Big Sky campsite.

Initially, he told the emergency dispatcher that he believed Kjersem had been brutally ravaged in a bear attack.

Now, authorities are saying Kjersem was a victim of a homicide.

A medical examiner determined the 35-year-old had suffered “multiple chop wounds,” as deputies are urging those with any information to come forward.

At a news conference on Wednesday, Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer said: “This is a homicide, and we are working all hours of the day and night to find his killer.”

“He was brutally killed at his campsite. And we need your help,” Springer added.

“So if you’re out in the woods, you need to remain vigilant.”

Kjersem’s sister, Jillian Price, also spoke to plead with the public to help find her brother’s murderer.

Investigators are unsure as to whether there is a threat to the community due to the little information they have.

“It’s like a big jigsaw puzzle,” the sheriff explained.

“When you’re working on these cases, you will get little pieces here and there, and eventually that creates a big, large picture that makes some sense.”
