IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WJMN) — Local legislators and health professionals held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Marshfield Clinic Dickinson Cancer Center Tuesday afternoon.

The clinic brings comprehensive cancer treatment and cutting-edge technology to residents of the U.P. This technology includes a linear accelerator and state of the art radiation therapy.

Patient comfort is also prioritized at Dickinson, with heated massage chairs provided to patients while they receive infusions.

Mandy Shelast, the President of the Marshfield Clinic Michigan Region spoke on the new jobs the clinic will add to the area.

“We’re going to be hiring a new oncologist, which, you know, with him or her, there’s going to be more support staff and then staff for the clinical trials as well. So, we’re looking to grow as much as the community needs us to to deliver care.”

The new center will also provide connections to world class services at the Marshfield clinic main campus. One of the advantages of these connections is access to clinical trials that were previously unavailable to residents of the U.P.

John Bartlett, M.D. the VPMA for Marshfield Clinic spoke on the role of legislators in making the facility a reality.

“It’s been exciting to see some bipartisan support for care here. We don’t see that in a lot of other realms right now. But to be able to see that rallying around care for patients in the Upper Peninsula in the right place at the right time, you know, we have two great cancer centers now in Marquette and in Iron Mountain.”

The center will see its first patient the week of July 15th.
