IRONTON, OH (WOWK) — One teen golfer is heading to a national tournament as he continues to overcome obstacles both on and off the green.

Brandon Mefford is just 15 years old, but he’s not your average golfer.

“When I was three years old, I was in a lawn mower accident. I cut off my foot at my Achilles tendon and it cut off my right arm. So, playing in regular sports is difficult,” Brandon says.

After searching and searching, Brandon tells 13 News that he finally found his home away from home out on the greens at the Ironton Country Club.

“Just the thrill of being able to come out here and play golf. When I joined the adaptive golf league, like I felt equal,” Brandon says.

After only playing a little more than a year and a half, he’s landed a spot on the 18-hole Junior Championship with the North American One-Armed Golfer Association.

“It’s my first ever tournament competing in and, of course, I still have a lot of stuff to get better at,” Brandon says.

While he continues to work on his swings and putting skills, he says he couldn’t have gotten this far without his amazing support system.

“I’m blessed to be able to have this place here and know that these people support me and want to see me succeed,” Brandon says referring to his family, coach, and the staff at the country club.

Brandon will be traveling to South Carolina in August to compete in the tournament.
