Man Arrested for Domestic Assault: Charged with Strangulation and Threats

Bradford, PA – A disturbing domestic dispute has led to the arrest of 66-year-old Joseph Smith on multiple charges, including strangulation and terroristic threats. The incident, which occurred on March 12, 2024, at approximately 6:14 PM, unfolded at a residence located at 38 Maplewood Avenue in Bradford.

Responding to a call about a domestic dispute between a male and a female, city officers were quick to arrive on the scene. Their investigation revealed a harrowing scenario where an adult female victim was assaulted and strangled with a phone charging cord by Smith. In addition to the physical assault, Smith had also reportedly issued verbal threats to kill the victim just before the strangulation attempt, escalating the severity of the situation.

Smith, described as a white male with gray hair, brown eyes, standing 5 feet 5 inches tall, and weighing 185 pounds, was taken into custody on the scene. He was then transported to the Bradford City Police Department (BCPD) for processing.

Following his arrest, Magistrate Engman arraigned Smith, setting bail at $50,000 cash. The gravity of the charges reflects the serious nature of the crimes, with Smith facing one count of strangulation (F1), one count of simple assault (M2), one count of terroristic threats (M1), and one count of possession of an instrument of a crime (M1).

Smith's preliminary hearings are scheduled, where the details of the case will be further examined. The arrest has shed light on the ongoing issues of domestic violence and the importance of swift law enforcement response to protect victims.
