NEW YORK, NY — Joseph Orengo Jr., a 29-year-old resident of the Bronx, was sentenced today to 12 years in prison for his involvement in an attempted shooting and a narcotics distribution conspiracy. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Vincent L. Briccetti, follows Orengo's guilty plea to charges of attempted shooting in connection with a drug debt and conspiracy to distribute narcotics, including fentanyl.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “This Office has been steadfast in its commitment to ending the scourge of gun violence on the streets of New York City. The defendant chose to fire multiple rounds on a residential street in the Bronx in broad daylight. He put the safety of New Yorkers at risk and terrorized a public space. Today’s sentence sends a clear message: this must stop. If you fire a gun on the streets of New York City as part of drug dealing, you will go to prison.”

The incident in question occurred on September 7, 2021, when Orengo reportedly confronted another man over a disputed drug debt on a residential street in the Bronx. As the victim attempted to drive away, Orengo fired two shots at him around 11:35 a.m., with bystanders present on the street, thus risking multiple lives over a narcotics-related dispute.

In addition to the prison term, Orengo will undergo five years of supervised release, during which he will be closely monitored to prevent any further criminal activity.

The successful conclusion of this case was due to the collaborative efforts of Homeland Security Investigations and the New York City Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven J. Kochevar from the White Plains Division.

U.S. Attorney Williams’s office remains dedicated to prosecuting those involved in narcotics distribution and violent crimes to uphold justice and maintain safety in New York City communities. This case serves as a stern warning to individuals engaged in or contemplating violent drug-related activities that such offenses will lead to serious repercussions.
