Bushnell, FL - According to the Florida Highway Patrol, in the early morning hours of August 3, 2024, a potentially catastrophic incident occurred involving a CSX freight train and a Jeep Wrangler on CR-720, east of US-301. The accident happened at approximately 8:20 AM when a Jeep Wrangler, driven by a 57-year-old woman from Bushnell, became disabled on an ungated rail crossing.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Jeep was traveling eastbound when it stalled atop the railroad tracks. Realizing the imminent danger and unable to move the vehicle, the driver quickly exited the Jeep. Moments later, the disabled vehicle was struck by a CSX freight train consisting of approximately 80 rail cars.

The impact was severe, but thanks to the swift actions of the train engineers, the train was brought to a controlled stop shortly after the collision. Miraculously, there were no injuries reported. Both train engineers and the Jeep's driver escaped unharmed.

Emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene, and the area was temporarily closed to traffic as authorities conducted their investigation and cleared the wreckage. The collision caused significant damage to the Jeep but did not result in any hazardous spills or further incidents.

Local officials have highlighted the importance of caution at railroad crossings, especially those that are ungated. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with rail crossings and the need for heightened awareness and safety measures.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Highway Patrol are continuing their investigation into the circumstances that led to the Jeep becoming disabled on the tracks. In the meantime, they urge all drivers to exercise extreme caution and adhere to safety protocols when approaching and crossing railroad tracks.
