URGENT: Tornado Watch Issued for Southern Louisiana and Southern Mississippi Due to Hurricane Francine

Norman, OK — The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued Tornado Watch Number 667 for parts of Southern Louisiana, Far Southern Mississippi, and surrounding coastal waters. The tornado watch is effective from 12:40 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, and will remain in place until 11:00 PM CDT this evening.

    Key Areas Affected:

    • Southern Louisiana
    • Far Southern Mississippi
    • Coastal Waters

    Summary:

Hurricane Francine is rapidly approaching the southern Louisiana coast and is expected to move inland while progressing northeastward through the region. The potential for tornadoes will increase through the afternoon and evening hours. The watch area extends approximately 70 miles north and south of a line from 60 miles west-southwest of Houma, LA, to 40 miles east-southeast of Gulfport, MS.

    Primary Threats:

    • Several tornadoes likely across the watch area.

    Precautionary/Preparedness Actions:

Residents in the affected areas should remain vigilant and prepare for potential tornado activity. A Tornado Watch signifies that conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and near the watch area. Be sure to monitor local weather alerts for updates and heed any warnings from authorities.

    Aviation Impact:

Pilots in the region should be aware of extreme turbulence, potential surface wind gusts up to 60 knots, and possible severe thunderstorms. Severe weather conditions could produce cumulonimbus clouds with tops reaching up to 50,000 feet, making air travel in the area particularly dangerous.

Reminder: A Tornado Watch means that tornadoes and severe thunderstorms are possible, but not yet occurring. Stay alert and be prepared to take immediate action if a warning is issued.
