It has been some time since I finished a novel and immediately felt compelled to turn back to the first page and start over. The Overstory by Richard Powers moved me this way. I knew Powers by name and reputation, and from reading a review of Bewilderment by my colleague David Starkey, but had never read him. During a visit to the Strand Bookstore (a reader’s nirvana) in New York City, my son handed me The Overstory, promising it would captivate me.

Dead Bobcat Found on Power Pole at Small Brush Fire on Santa Rosa Road
A dead bobcat was discovered on a power pole at the scene of a small vegetation fire near Lompoc on Sunday night. Santa Barbara County and Lompoc firefighters were dispatched to an incident in the 2100 block of Santa Rosa Road near Highway 1 at approximately 8:30 p.m., county fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

MCASB Welcomes a New Era with ‘The New Art Salon: Arte del Pueblo!’
Following an open call to the community, more than 150 artists answered the call for the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara’s (MCASB) current exhibition, The New Art Salon: Arte del Pueblo! The astounding variety of work is on view at the Museum upstairs at Paseo Nuevo through July 28, and our photographer Ingrid Bostrom (also a proud MCASB Board Member) was on hand to photograph last weekend’s opening party fun, which also marked the debut of the organization’s new Co-Executive Directors: Dalia Garcia (who’s been working with MCASB and was promoted), and Fabián Leyva-Barragán, who was previously working with Charlie Wylie at Santa Barbara Museum of Art in photo and new media.
