Upcoming candidate forums on Whidbey
As the primary election approaches, a number of public candidate forums seek to educate voters on Whidbey Island. The Clinton Community Council is hosting two nonpartisan moderated forums on June 25 for the Island County Commissioner District 1 position and on July 9 for the 10th legislative district positions, which include two state representatives and one state senator.
Parks and rec district abandons restructure plans
The North Whidbey Pool, Park and Recreation District is calling off its push for a metropolitan park district. The effort to restructure the district began in March when parks and rec commissioners presented to the Oak Harbor city council. By getting approval from both the council and the Island County commissioners, it could skip the petitioning process to get the change on the primary ballot.
Newspaper box arsonist charged
A Langley man is accused of starting a fire that burned a newspaper box and the side of the Clinton Post Office in January, according to court documents. Stephan McCary, 31, appeared in Island County Superior Court June 14. The judge found probable cause existed to believe McCary may have committed the crime of reckless burning in the first degree. The judge ordered him not to go the Clinton Post Office while the case is pending.
