Community Connection: Celebrating the World’s Oldest Ham
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – In 1902, Pembroke Gwaltney Jr. cured a ham, tagged it and forgot about it. Twenty years later, Gwaltney found it in a storage and named it his “pet ham.” That pet ham is known as Hammy and its celebrating another birthday. Thomas Robert Griffin Sr.
Thomas Robert Griffin, Sr., 73, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024. He is preceded in death by his parents, Francis Seward Griffin and Mary Virginia Jenkins Drewery. Tommie was born in Isle of Wight County and was a resident of Suffolk and Isle of Wight for his entire life. He was raised a farmer’s kid, working alongside his Dad on the family farm. He began his working life as a Teacher and then worked for Smith & Douglas, which later became Royster Clark, in chemicals and fertilizer sales and service. He raised chickens for Perdue, ran a convenience store and a fertilizer business, and was a peanut broker for Birdsong and Hancock Peanut Company. He later worked as a financial planner, helping numerous school employees in many school systems retire with a solid plan to benefit themselves in their golden years.
