WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Marblehead plates a dozen against Lynn English

A Saturday morning baseball game at Seaside Park – that’s just what the doctor ordered.

Host Marblehead (8-4 Northeastern Conference) celebrated its Senior Day in style, taking care of Lynn English, 12-5, to improve to 12-5. The Bulldogs dipped to 7-9.

For the Magicians, who plated six runs in the third inning, Brooks Keefe led the way, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Other contributors were Riley Schmitt (2-for-4), Bodie Bartram (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Chris Cannuscio (2-for-3), Charlie Sachs (2 RBI, 2 R), and Colt Wales (2-for-4, 2 RBI).

Matt Mahan did most of Marblehead’s pitching, going four innings with four punchouts and just three hits allowed. His team outhit English, 13-6, and committed one less error (3-2).

As for the Bulldogs, they were led by Wilfredo Perez’s hit and two RBI.

BASEBALL

The Rams held their own against Reading, but, ultimately, saw their record drop to 9-8 after a shutout loss. Christian Figueroa (5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K) pitched well for Classical, while Rolky Brea went 3-for-3.

Lynnfield steamrolled over yet another opponent Saturday to improve to 15-2. This time, the victim was host Amesbury in another mercy-rule shortened game. The Pioneers pounded 13 hits – five of them for extra bases – to crush the Indians, 16-2, in six innings.

Luke DiSilvio earned the win with five strong innings of three-hit ball. He allowed two runs, one of them unearned, struck out four, and walked one. Ben Dahlstedt closed out the win with one inning of relief. He stuck out three and walked two.

Madux Iovenilli (2-for-3, 2 runs, 3 RBI) blasted his third homer in two games. Tyler Adamo (3-for-4, 2 doubles, R) and Owen Mullin (2-for-3, R) also had three RBI, while Matt Papagikos (1-for-1, R), Dylan Damiani (2-for-3, double, R) and DiSilvio (1-for-1, double) knocked in two runs apiece. Nick Groussis (1-for-3, 2 R, RBI) and Anthony Grabau (R) also played a part.

SOFTBALL

St. Mary’s 4

The Spartans entered Saturday’s action with a nine-game winning streak, but saw it end at the hands of the Fishermen, who won convincingly by 13 runs. Ashanthy Pardilla and Brooke Moloney had two hits apiece for St. Mary’s, which still stands at 9-3.

BOYS LACROSSE

Lexington 8

Finn Gallup made 13 saves to keep the closely-contested game a win for Marblehead. Gio Garibotto led the way with three goals and two assists, followed by Cam Waldman’s hat trick, Will Sullivan (G, A), and Greg Motorny (G, A).

Mystic Valley 4

Saturday was a good day – and then some – for St. Mary’s, which won on Senior Day and clinched its spot in the state tournament. Ava Nason led the hosts’ explosive offense with a hat trick.

Melrose 14
Marblehead 8

Melrose doubled up Marblehead, 8-4, by halftime before keeping its momentum intact from there. The Magicians’ record dropped to 5-11 as the season dwindles down.

Maddie Forbes (2 G, 2 A, GB), Kathryn Commoss (3 G), Avery Wysor (G), and Molly Bullard (8 S) played well in defeat.

Other than Thursday’s defeat at the hands of powerhouse St. John’s Prep, it was another strong week from the Pioneers, who stand at 12-1 and 9-0 in the Cape Ann League.

At Newburyport on Saturday, Dan Levin, Shea McCarthy, and Russell Kasdon cruised to singles wins, as did the second doubles duo of Shlok Kudrimoti and Kurt Rothermund.

“Singles dominated and the second doubles match was as exciting as any doubles match has been this year,” said Lynnfield coach Joe Dunn.

Saturday, the visiting Pioneers took on the top-ranked Division 3 team in the state and came up short. Paige Martino was the lone winner, taking the first singles match 7-5, 6-2. The Pioneers had to shuffle the lineup due to the absence of second singles stalwart, Lily Alves.

“Obviously, playing without Lily put us at a disadvantage, but to be able to play competitively was a positive sign,” said Lynnfield coach Craig Stone. “We need to finish strong all week to set the stage for a long run in the Division 4 state tournament.”

Ranked No. 3 in the Division 4 power rankings, the Pioneers (9-5) are back on the courts Monday at CAL rival Triton (4 p.m.).

TRACK AND FIELD

Dominant.

That’s the only way to describe the Peabody boys track team when it comes to outdoor track. Peabody has competed in 16 Northeastern Conference Championships since joining in 2008, winning each and every one of them.

Saturday at Danvers High, the Tanners didn’t just win, but absolutely lapped the field with 166 points, more than double that of runner-up Marblehead, which tallied 82.

The girls tallied 100 points and finished third behind winner Masconomet (160 points) and runner-up Marblehead (118 points). Alessandra Forgione had a meet to remember, winning both the discus (115-03) and javelin (114-08), while Nicole Ofurie won the shot put (PR 33-02.5).

The boys’ dominance was especially on display in the field events, with the Tanners winning gold in five of six events.

Alex Jackson won two events and placed third in another. He won the shot put with a meet record 57-08 and also won the discus with a school record and PR 179-04. He placed third in the javelin (142-07).

Evan Bedard was also a double winner. He won the long jump with a meet record 22-0 and also won the triple jump (43-04). Declan Smith won the high jump with a PR 6-00.

As for the Catholic Central Championships in Attleboro, St. Mary’s boys (122 points) finished third, while its girls (50) placed sixth. Bishop Fenwick landed in sixth for boys (39) and third for girls (113).

First-place Spartans were Kyle Kwiatek (2-mile, 10:09.44), Scott Amin (high jump, 6-03, Outstanding Performer Field Athlete), Brandon Cruz (javelin, 132-04), and the boys 4×100 team of Ross Pena, Chance Bonfanti, Jimmy Jennings, and Mehdi Khemmich (45.26). On the girls’ side, Jazmin Rodriguez recorded second place in high jump (4-08) and Kelsey Kwiatek took fourth in the mile (5:47.68).

For Fenwick, Julia Davis took second in the 800 (2:23.91), Marianna Kay placed first in the 2-mile (11:54.97), and McKenna Leaman placed second in discus (98-07).
