Team of the Week – Lynn Classical baseball

You know what I’ve been thinking? Having a first-year head coach, more than a dozen freshmen, and a few heartbreaking defeats never counted them out.

Lynn Classical’s baseball team, helmed by Leon Elwell in his first spring, clinched its spot in the Division 2 state tournament Thursday after an 8-1 victory against Revere.

It was their 10th win, compared to just nine losses.

“I feel great. I’m really happy for the kids. Not a lot of people gave us a chance to get in with a new coach and a large turnover,” Elwell said. “We have 16 freshmen in the program. I’m really excited about this year and, overall, what we’re building.”

Christian Figueroa struck out nine Patriots and connected on two hits offensively, while Yoniel Cabral racked up three RBI.

The win came shortly after a 10-0 thrashing of Chelsea, too. That one saw Rolky Brea go yard and Jacob Beyea go home with his first varsity hit.

It won’t be easy come tournament time. Three D2 teams have at least 15 wins under their belts in Walpole, Plymouth North, and Hopkinton.

That said – can’t count out Classical.

    Rams, good week.
