Region readies for Memorial Day

This year, Memorial Day events will take place in Lynn, Lynnfield, Marblehead, Peabody, and Swampscott. There will be something for everyone at these events, with a range of activities and celebrations to attend.

LYNN

Jewish War Veterans Memorial

Jewish war veterans will hold a memorial ceremony at the Pride of Lynn Cemetery at 89 Lake Shore Road on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Memorial Day Ceremony and Procession

The procession will begin at Manning Field, 76 Locust St. at 1:30 p.m. and continue to Pine Grove Cemetery, 145 Boston St. All are welcome to join the Lynn Veterans Council and participating veterans, youth, and community groups.

Contact Lynn Veterans Services at 791-586-6911 to take part. The route will follow Locust Street to Stetson Street, then turn left on Boston Street, before turning left to the sunken garden at the cemetery.

The Memorial Day Ceremony will immediately follow the procession at 2 p.m.

LYNNFIELD

Memorial Day Parade and Celebration

On Monday, the parade will start in the parking lot of Our Lady of Assumption Church at 17 Grove St. at 8:15 a.m.

The parade will march to the South Burying Ground on Salem Street and then to Willow Cemetery on Summer Street. Ceremonies will be conducted at each location.

The parade will return to the South Lynnfield Fire Station for a brief recess. The parade will reassemble at the middle school at 10 a.m. and will march to the West Burying Ground, Old Burying Ground, and Forest Hill Cemetery. Ceremonies will be conducted at each location.

The parade will then march to the Meeting House and Common for a final ceremony, which will begin at approximately 11 a.m.

The celebration will include music and a complimentary lunch at the conclusion of the ceremony on the Common. All activities will conclude around 1 p.m.

All veterans and residents are encouraged to participate in some or all of the ceremonies, according to the Lynnfield Veterans Services Officer Bruce Siegel.

In case of heavy rain, the ceremony will be held in the Middle School’s auditorium at 11 a.m.

MARBLEHEAD

Grave-flagging at Waterside Cemetery

There will be a grave-flagging ceremony at Waterside Cemetery at 294 West Shore Drive on Saturday at 9 a.m. The general public is invited to participate and participants will meet at the Bell Tower.

VFW Veterans’ Service at Star of the Sea Cemetery

On Sunday at 1 p.m. there will be a veterans’ service at the cemetery at 140 Lafayette St. The public is welcome to attend.

Memorial Day Parade

On Monday, the parade will start at the Old Town House. The main parade will take place at 9 a.m. The route will take participants to Waterside Cemetery.

It will feature honorary Grand Marshal Ken Drewry, a U.S. Navy veteran from World War II. The principal speakers will include Army Gen. David McKiernan at Memorial Park and Thomas Mathers of the Army at Waterside Cemetery.

PEABODY

Memorial Day Parade

The parade will start at the intersection of Washington Street and Allens Lane at 11 a.m. The route will follow Washington Street and turn left onto Main Street to City Hall.

Memorial Day Ceremony

At the end of the parade, there will be a ceremony in front of the World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War monuments on the City Hall’s lawn.

This year’s Memorial Day observance will be the “biggest one ever,” Peabody Veterans Services Agent Steve Patten said.

The Medal of Fidelity will be presented to the families of 25 veterans who died from service-related injuries or illnesses. A Peabody veteran was the first in the state to receive the medal last year, Patten said.

SWAMPSCOTT

Memorial Tree Arboretum Re-dedication

On Saturday at 11 a.m., the public is invited to the re-dedication of the Memorial Tree Arboretum on the Town Hall’s lawn.

Memorial Day Ceremony

A ceremony will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. in the veterans’ section of Swampscott Cemetery at 400 Essex St.
