ROUNDUP: Classical cross country cruises

What a day it was for the Lynn Classical cross country program. Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams defeated Chelsea Wednesday afternoon in Lynn.

The boys won, 25-30, behind first-place winner Gianni Elmudesi. The Rams also saw runners finish third (Elijah Morin) and fourth (Brandon Sok) to move Classical to 2-2.

The girls (2-2) earned their second win as well, 25-27, over Chelsea. Marianna De Leon finished first for the third time this season, while the Lady Rams got help from Sarita Guzman, Abby Perez and Alyei Ayoal as well.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Marblehead boys defeated Winthrop, 15-50, at Gatchell’s Park. Led by senior David Alpert who took home first place, the Magicians remained perfect at 4-0. Better yet, they took the top-five spots (Jacob Szalewicz, Will Cerrutti, Nate Assa, Jared Potach). Next for the boys is a trip to Warwick, Rhode Island where they will compete in the Ocean State Invitational against teams from across the Northeast region.

On the girls’ (3-1) side, a 17-42 win on the 3.05-mile course, Marblehead’s Marri O’Connell rolled to first once again, followed closely by teammates Ruby Assa and Evelina Beletsky in second and third, respectively. Coming in shortly after the lead pack, in fourth place, was Evie Becker.

It was a strong home-opener for the Lynnfield girls, who won, 20-41, against Ipswich. An opposing runner finished first, but Lynnfield’s Gabby Bottaro, Caitlin Buoniconti, Kaila George, Abby Lopez, Shea Moore, and Maeve Wertz took the next six spots. Lily White secured 10th place to round out Pioneer positives.

In the boys’ 18-41 victory, Lynnfield grabbed the top-four places and seven of the top 10. Once again, Shea McCarthy led the way with a winning time of 16:26. He was followed by Dylan Nguyen (17:05, 2nd), Nic DeGennaro (17:49, 3rd), Liam Gardner (17:58, 4th) and Ashkrit Mahajan (18:29, 8th).

Cardinal Spellman 0

No home turf, no problem for the Spartans (4-2-1), who scored a three-goal win on Wednesday. Aiden Martins scored a pair of goals, Eider Solis tacked on another, and Cian LeVasseur registered the shutout.

Danvers 1

The Tanners moved to 5-3 with a narrow escape against Danvers. Osama Mishal played the role of the hero with both goals, while Kacper Kowalczyk delivered both assists. According to coach Stan McKeen, goalie Dylan Flanagan, Joaquim Nunes, Marshall Simpson, Fabio Goulart, and Jayden Lopez all played well.

Danvers 1

The Falcons took an early lead, but that didn’t deter the Tanners. Thanks to a goal from Ally Bettencourt, assisted by Brooke Lomasney, Peabody tied the game. Moments later, goalie Alessandra Forgione (19 saves) saved a penalty to keep things even.

Maggie Jolin played well in the midfield, according to Peabody coach Andrew Douglass.

Masconomet 4
Marblehead 0

Masconomet continued its strong season as the Chieftains jumped ahead, 3-0, within 20 minutes against Marblehead. However, the Magicians tightened up and allowed just one goal from there. Head coach Lisa Wales added defender Ainsley MacDonald was a “standout defensively.”

Cardinal Spellman 0

St. Mary’s climbed to 4-3-1 this fall, blanking Spellman at Manning Field. Sophie Skabeikis scored both goals, Brooke Moloney delivered an assist, Eleni Echeverria secured a shutout, and Cam Dunn dominated the middle of the field.

Despite a goal from Olivia Quagrello (assisted by Maisie Russo), the Big Blue met their match in Masconomet. Lilah Caplan made six saves in defeat.

VOLLEYBALL

Whittier Tech 2

The Tigers pounced on Whittier Tech, winning narrowly in set scores of 22-25, 25-8, 25-13, 15-25, and 18-16. Zahara Belizaire (26 assists, 9 digs, 3 kills, 3 aces) and Ana Godoy (26 digs, 3 aces) led the way.

“Huge effort from the entire team and we look to keep the momentum going Friday against Innovation,” said Tech coach Kaitlyn Wechsler, whose side improved to 4-5.

Also contributing were Lia Morales (9 digs, 8 aces, 6 kills), Katie Tartarini (14 kills), Azya Castro (8 kills, 8 digs, 7 aces), Mahlyna Williams (8 digs), and Isabella Walcott (7 digs).

Call it back-to-back wins for the Spartans to bump their record to 7-4. Stephen Nason eagled hole No. 12 at Gannon Municipal Golf Course en route to a 32-point performance. Shea Newhall scored 31 and teammate Micah Hashikawa tallied 25 for St. Mary’s.

Marblehead 41
Peabody 31

Marblehead defeated Peabody for the second time this year. The first time the two teams played, Marblehead won, 52.5-19.5.

“It was much more competitive than the first match we had earlier in the season,” said Peabody coach Peter Cronan.

Marblehead coach Bob Green agreed.

“A match that was closer than the score indicates,” he said.

For Marblehead, four golfers (Tyler Forbes, Jacob Hershfield, Will Macrina, Dylan Whitman) went home victorious. On the Peabody side, Tristan Joyce tied his match, Nate Palhares won his, and both Andrew Pinto and Anthony Modungo drew even as well.

Swampscott 33

The Big Blue fell short against the Vikings on Wednesday. Swampscott’s Tyler Ostroff shot a 38, which was good enough for him to win his match.

Jack Smyth and Cole Manning also won their matches, while Luke McGonagle tied with his opponent.
