The super search is on in Swampscott

SWAMPSCOTT — The School Committee announced Thursday that it will hold a formal interview of Superintendent of Schools candidate and middle school principal Jason Calichman during its meeting on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Earlier this month, current Superintendent of Schools Pamela Angelakis officially endorsed Calichman to be her successor when she retires next June.

Committee Chair Glenn Paster encouraged his fellow members to prepare questions for the interview, and also welcomed community members to send their input to the Committee to potentially be used as inspiration for some of the interviewers’ questions.

While the Committee is overall supportive of Angelakis’s recommendation, multiple members have expressed their desire to conduct a thorough search with more than just one candidate.

The Committee also announced it had previously voted unanimously during a recent Executive Session to increase Angelakis’s salary for fiscal year 2025 by 3%.

“For employment contracts, the attorney general wants School Committees to ratify their previous Executive Session votes for employment contract amendments that take place in Executive Session,” Paster explained.

Therefore, the Committee had to vote once more on the salary increase and it passed unanimously. Member Carin Marshall was not present for Thursday’s meeting.

Member Suzanne Wright also volunteered to be the School Committee’s representative on the Community Life Center Feasibility Task Force.

A community life center is a facility with recreational opportunities for seniors and other community members of numerous demographics. In August, Director of Aging Services Heidi Whear approached the Select Board with the idea of forming the task force, and it voted unanimously to do so.
