ROUNDUP: English escapes Classical by a goal in boys soccer showdown

Lynn English’s boys soccer team took on traditional archrival Lynn Classical Thursday evening at Manning Field. In a back-and-forth showdown, English had the last laugh in a 3-2 final.

Goal-scorers for the Bulldogs were Erick Zepeda, Einor Angel, and Jose Licardie, while Wilson Lopez, Henry Edeko, and Licardie dished out assists.

Edison Chacon and Chris Galvez found the back of the net for Classical.

“We are hitting a difficult stride,” said Classical coach Eric Moreno. “Players were out this week with injuries, unfortunately. With the game tied, 2-2, Chris went down with a knee injury and from there, we couldn’t hold on.”

Good teams play well late in games, and the defending champions have been there before. The Pioneers trailed at halftime, but Rocco Scenna (Joel Anthony assist) and Matt Reinold took care of things in the second half. Reinold’s game-winner came from Nate Zelvan.

“They’re experienced, skilled, and finish their chances,” Lynnfield coach Brent Munroe said of Scenna and Reinold. “We were down, 1-0, at the half and scored two in the second, which was good… Kelan (Cardinal) didn’t face a lot of shots today, but made a really great save off a deflection at the end.”

Emma Rose scored twice and the Pioneers cruised by Ipswich, 4-0, Thursday evening. Clara Caulfield (goal, 2 assists) and Bella Sykes (goal, assist) helped lead the charge.

“Defensively, we played well in wet conditions,” said Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont. “Ariana Guarracino and Jordan Calichman were really solid in the back. Also, our goalie, Victoria Minor, played well and managed the game well.”

VOLLEYBALL

Marblehead 3
Danvers 1

Thursday evening was a good one for the Marblehead volleyballers, who took care of Danvers in scores of 23-25, 25-13, 25-15, and 25-17.

After dropping the first game, Marblehead coach Killeen Miller said passing and serving became “much stronger.”

Greta Sachs (12 kills, 3 aces, 5 blocks) led the way for the Magicians, followed by Sammy Walker, who “played one of her best games of the season,” according to Miller, with nine kills, nine digs, and three blocks.

Marblehead upped its record to 6-3 before Friday’s road game in Reading. From there, on Tuesday, Marblehead and Masconomet will come together to raise awareness for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The game is being led by Walker, who lost her mother, Heather, to brain cancer a little more than a year ago. Marblehead and Masconomet have raised more than $1,000 for the foundation.

Swampscott traveled to Saugus and returned home with a sweep (25-17, 26-24, 25-21). The Big Blue were paced by a pair of juniors in Lila Paster (8 kills, 2 blocks, 6 aces, 12 service points) and Gillian Beaver (6 kills, 4 blocks).

FIELD HOCKEY

Talk about a versatile effort. The Spartans (6-2-1) saw nine goal-scorers at Manning Field on Thursday. St. Mary’s was led by Karina Martinez (2 goals) and Mary Anderson.

Gloucester 1

Chloe Puzzo and Victoria Pierro found the back of the net as Swampscott squeaked by Gloucester, 2-1, at Blocksidge Field. Olivia Quagrello and Maisie Russo dished out assists, while Lilah Caplan stood strong with three big saves.

The Rams fell just short against league-leading Medford at Gannon Municipal Golf Course. Boo DiSia, Braeden Ohannesian, and Finn Dalferro played well for Classical, which dropped to 2-5.

Wind and rain didn’t slow down The Prep, which escaped St. John’s Shrewsbury at Salem Country Club. AJ Bodnar (37) led the Eagles, followed by 38s from Seamus O’Holleran, Jack Carew, Brian Loughlin, Dominic Meyers, and Zach Enners.

“The team showed great poise in tough, windy, rainy conditions today,” said Prep coach Brian Jasiak.
