WEEKEND ROUNDUP: St. Mary’s football rolls over Arlington Catholic

This one was never in doubt. St. Mary’s football team (3-0) took care of Arlington Catholic (0-3) with ease Saturday afternoon. Better yet, it was on enemy turf in a 59-7 final.

The Spartans received touchdowns from Rowan Merryman (2), Maxwell Parent (2), Sam Phelps, Tyler Guy, Devell Pamplin, and Ellis White.

Yaniel Belliard was 4-for-6 with 86 yards and two touchdowns. One of his completions was good for 35 yards to Tyler Guy, who caught three balls for 65 yards. Demetri Koutsouflakis rushed the ball six times for 76 yards (long of 18), while Parent carried four times for 54 yards.

Defensively, do-it-all Parent made three tackles and snagged an interception. Pamplin also went home with an interception, while Hagen Parent and Damion Smith made three tackles apiece.

St. Mary’s led by as many as 29 points with 11:47 remaining in the second quarter. Coach Sean Driscoll’s team returns to Manning Field this Friday against Cathedral with kickoff slated for 6 p.m.

FOOTBALL

St. John’s Prep 28
La Salle 0

A month into the season, and The Prep remains undefeated. The Eagles cruised, 28-0, past La Salle (Rhode Island) at Glatz Field in a Saturday matinee. Deacon Robillard ran for 1- and 2-yard rushing scores to lead the hosts.

Gael Garcia hauled in a 46-yard touchdown pass from Chris Vargas, while Lucas Pelletier took an interception 28 yards to the promised land to round out the scoring. Jeff Quigley led Prep’s ground game with 15 carries for 112 yards and Pierson Scala took charge of the aerial attack with a 59-yard reception.

Talk about a versatile offensive attack – seven Eagles caught passes Saturday afternoon.

BOYS SOCCER

Shawsheen 2

The Panthers have been plagued with injuries lately, but that didn’t stop them from doubling up Shawsheen on Saturday.

“We continue to move up the rankings and currently sit in sixth place in our division,” said KIPP coach Josh Canales.

Anaias Lopez opened the game with a beautiful goal from the 18-yard line. It was followed by a tap-in from Alexi Sandoval – one of his two goals on Saturday. Lastly, Jelder DeLeon danced through the defense and sent a shot from inside of the box to seal it.

Assists came from Jossue Giron, Raffy “Ceba” Consoro (2), And DeLeon.

GIRLS SOCCER

Marblehead 5
Salem 0

Marblehead delivered an offensive explosion against Salem. Sydney Ball (2 goals), Courtney Hitscherich (2), and Lucy McDonald ripped twine.

Dishing out assists were Lucy Church (2), Nora Mahan (first varsity point), McDonald, and Callie Gilmore. Lily Heller picked up a save for Marblehead.

Hitscherich added to her goal-scoring total with her fourth and fifth goals. According to Marblehead coach Lisa Wales, Ashley Mortensen played a strong game in the midfield, while Ainsley McDonald and Ava Machado “continue to anchor our defense.

“This was our sixth game in the past two weeks, with five of those games being on the road,” Wales said. “We have faced some adversity and key injuries, and to get a team win today was a terrific way to close out this two-week stretch. We are now 4-3-3 and ready to take on Peabody Tuesday.”

FIELD HOCKEY

Saturday came with not one, but two hat-tricks. Alyssa Norden and Camdyn Driscoll each did the honors as St. Mary’s cruised by Arlington Catholic, 9-0, on enemy turf. The Spartans upped their record to 7-2-1.

CROSS COUNTRY

The MSTCA Bay State Invitational saw the Spartans well-represented. St. Mary’s Kelsey Kwiatek achieved a personal-best time of 19:08 on Saturday, taking fourth place in her race.

Marblehead’s girls made their way to Goddard Park to compete in the Brown Invitational. Marrietta O’Connell secured 11th place in the championship 5K (92 runners) with a time 19:06.4.

“Marri O’Connell had her first true test of the season and walked away very happy with her result,” said Marblehead coach Will Herlihy. “Despite the slow course, Marri finished 11th against some of the very best runners in the region and beat all but one runner from an impressive California team.”

Evelina Beletsky shined in her 5K debut. In a field of 252 runners, she placed 84th with a time of 23:30.9.

“Running 23:30 on a slow course is a great sign for the sophomore, who has been having an outstanding first season,” Herlihy said.

The freshmen race (4K) featuring 84 runners saw Ruby Assa, Evie Becker, Mary Donnellan, and Anna Cruikshank deliver strong showings.

“Marblehead had two runners win medals: Ruby Assa in 13th and Evie Becker 25th… these two should be thrilled with their performances,” Herlihy said. “Mary Donnellan had a bold start to the race and battled all the way to the finish to a very solid 47th-place finish, keeping her average mile under eight minutes… Anna Cruikshank rounded out Marblehead’s freshmen with a 65th-place finish. All of these young runners have so much to be proud about, and this race was just another great showing for the future of this program.”
