    Household costs in Marblehead higher than state average

    MARBLEHEAD — The amount of household bills residents pay in town is 17 percent higher than the state average.

    Per a report from doxo, a bill servicer, the average household in Marblehead pays $3,346 per month in bills. That’s $326 more than the average of $3,020 in Essex County, which is already the fifth most expensive county in the state, as it relates to household bills.

    Doxo has devised a Cost of Bills Index (COBI), using the 10 most common bill categories such as utilities, cable and phone, mobile phone, auto loans, auto, life and health insurance, security, rent and mortgage. With the national average being represented by a score of 100, Marblehead received a score of 157, indicating that its amount of bills are 57 percent higher than the average in the U.S., too. Massachusetts received a score of 133, making it the third most expensive state by the COBI, trailing California and Hawaii.

    Of the per month cost to Marbleheaders’ monthly bills, mortgage makes up more than half of its cost, at 56 percent, averaging $1,873.76.

    Marblehead ranks as the 36th most expensive in the state, with 25 percent of annual income going towards the cost of household bills, and each household in town having an average income of $163,561.

    Residents on average spend $40,155 per year on bills.
