Principal at head of class for Swampscott super

SWAMPSCOTT — The School Committee announced its new date, Oct. 24, to formally interview Middle School Principal Jason Calichman for the position of superintendent.

The committee also invited the community to attend a public forum, hosted by Calichman, at the new Swampscott Elementary School on Wednesday, Oct. 30. According to School Committee Chair Glenn Paster, the former Swampscott High School baseball coach is the only candidate who is presently scheduled for an interview. Multiple School Committee members have expressed their desire to conduct a thorough search with more than just one candidate.

In September, current Superintendent of Schools Pamela Angelakis officially endorsed Calichman to be her successor when she retires on June 30. Calichman has held a leadership position at the middle school since 2011, when he started as an assistant principal. He was promoted to his current position of principal in 2015. Angelakis gave Calichman credit for creating a great culture among both students and staff. In addition, she emphasized that he has always had an interest in improving the district as a whole, despite being responsible for only one school.

Calichman’s original interview was scheduled for Oct. 10, but had to be rescheduled due to Calichman’s participation in a sixth grade science trip to the Ecology School in Saco, Maine.

The School Committee is expected to appoint Angelakis’ replacement during its meeting on Nov. 7.
