LTTE: Item’s opposition to KIPP’s expansion disappointing and unwarranted

To the editor:

I have been a KIPP parent for almost four years. My child has benefitted from consistent, individualized attention inside and outside the classroom. Through emphasis on important themes like teamwork, civic responsibility, and justice, KIPP has helped my child grow into a compassionate, engaged member of the community with a strong sense of purpose. I have been impressed with the support given to teachers, enabling them to excel in their roles while also nurturing an engaging learning environment. Thanks to KIPP, my child is thriving academically and personally.

Lynn’s school-age population is increasing rapidly, and the city’s schools are struggling to keep up. KIPP Academy is ready to expand and help create more opportunities for the children and families who make Lynn their home. Demand for KIPP’s programs is already high. I know many people on the waitlist who have entered the lottery multiple times. Demand will only increase as more families move into Lynn.

Our public education resources belong to families – not the district. As a parent, I know my child best. I knew that KIPP was the place where they would be best positioned to succeed, so I entered my child into the lottery – a blind lottery, with no eligibility criteria – and we were one of the lucky ones to be picked. I want every parent to be able to make the decision I made, if that’s what they believe is best for their child.

We should be embracing – not limiting – the opportunities KIPP Academy, a public school, offers Lynn’s children. I hope to see KIPP expand its reach to more children, as the opportunities provided can truly transform young lives.
