ROUNDUP: Lynn Tech, KIPP football teams win big

Ahead of Friday night’s football game against Keefe Regional Technical High School (Framingham), Lynn Tech coach James Runner told his team, “Go be physical.”

In a 42-0 win at Framingham State, it was exactly that.

“We were feeling good after the bye week. We’ve been doing our lifting, running, and everything,” Runner said. “All of our guys are healthy, which is huge for us, and I’m really happy with the work we did in preparing for Keefe.”

Next up for the Tigers is Whittier, which stands at 4-2.

“We’re going to be playing a lot of vocational teams over the next few weeks. We’ve got to keep that chip on our shoulder,” Runner said. “We’ve got a good nucleus of seniors who are surrounded by good underclassmen.”

It was also a good day for KIPP, which found out Friday morning that it was ranked No. 4 in the MIAA Division 8 power rankings. Then, the Panthers (3-2) followed it up with a 24-0 win at home against Lowell Catholic.

Jose Echavarria (2 TDs) led the way with a 49-yard touchdown catch and a 99-yard interception return. The pick-six was one of two interceptions for the senior.

Danny Ortiz joined the party with a rushing touchdown – his third in two games.

KIPP visits Salem at 6:30 p.m. next Friday.

St. Mary’s recorded its fifth consecutive shutout of the season with a two-goal win on enemy turf. Mehdi Khemmich continued his strong play with another two goals.

One game, eight goals for the Spartans, who upped their record to 7-3-2 with a win against Gloucester. Brooke Moloney netted a hat-trick, while Angelina Owumi went home with her first varsity goal.

Winthrop 1

Call it a barrage, as Peabody scored nine times to conquer the Vikings on enemy soil. Do-it-all Connie Patturelli led the way with four goals, while Gabby Gosselin, Avery Bettencourt, Victoria Vaz, Avery Marcus, and Avery Bettencourt also found the back of the net.

FIELD HOCKEY

This one was tied at halftime in a “true battle of great field hockey,” according to Lynnfield coach Kerri Doherty. In the end, her Pioneers pulled one out after Taylor Valiton scored the game-winning goal 12:14 into the third quarter (Izzy Fiorentino assist).

Doherty credited Gia Marotta, Lauren Mattia, and Lauren MacDonald (7 saves) for strong play.

“And defensively, we held solid, led by Chloe Gromko, Lily Alves, and Hayden Valiton,” Doherty said.

In set scores of 18-25, 13-25, and 23-25, the Tigers were tamed on home hardwood. Leading the Tech (9-6) charge were Zahara Belizaire (11 assists, 6 aces, 5 digs), Lia Morales (7 digs, 6 kills, 2 aces), Isabella Walcott (7 digs), Ana Godoy (6 digs), and Katie Tartarini (4 kills).

GOLF

Catholic Central League Championship

St. Mary’s (325 points) finished second in the CCL Championship, falling only to Archbishop Williams (324) at Trull Brook Golf Course in Tewksbury. Bishop Fenwick (351) placed sixth.

Stephen Nason (78 points) finished fourth individually, followed by fellow Spartans Chase Collins (9th, 82), Micah Hashikawa (10th, 82), and Shea Newhall (12th, 83).
