Coyotes attacking dogs in Saugus

SAUGUS — The coyote presence in town has persisted as six more dogs have been attacked by coyotes in recent weeks. Four out of the six dogs have died as a result of the attacks.

The attacks have taken place in multiple areas, but a high concentration has been in the Baker Hill and Bristow Street neighborhoods. Each has reportedly taken place between dusk and 10 p.m, according to Saugus Animal Control Officer Dan McCullough.

Locals have been commenting on Facebook, sharing their concerns about what they feel is a growing issue.

“Residents are encouraged to be extra vigilant of their surroundings as coyotes seek out food sources to bulk up in advance of the winter,” Town Manager Scott Crabtree said in a press release.

The release also included measures that should be taken to help protect pets from further attacks. The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife recommends staying with pets at all times when they are outdoors. It emphasizes that watching them from afar will not be enough to deter coyotes from attacking.

According to MassWildlife, late January through early March is coyote-mating season.

“Coyotes are very active during the winter while courting mates and defending territory,” MassWildlife said.
