Poured candle bar, heat across NY, Finger Lakes ranking, boilermaker

    Good morning ☀️

It’s Tuesday and today I’m bringing you some advice if you’re interested in starting a business or learning about the Tompkins County’s business climate.

If you have any Finger Lakes moments you’d like to share, send me your best photos and a short passage to JMack@gannett.com so I can share the love with other readers this Friday. Click here to sign up for more daily briefings from the Ithaca Journal.

Without further ado, here’s a look at a new and unique shop now in Ithaca’s Press Bay Alley.

Ricky Tiscareno said he started to notice the exhaustion in his husband caused by his corporate job, which inspired the couple to create the custom candle-making business as a means of capturing tender moments and offering single-source scents to those who, like his partner Dennis Green, could use a bit of a self-care.

This coalesced into an upscale but comforting Poured Candle Bar at the end of Ithaca’s Press Bay Alley at the beginning of July, which has since filled the air with the scents of rosemary, leather and sandalwood, among over 50 scents custom-made by the business for patrons to mix and match to their liking.

The place certainly has spirit, once housing the live music venue “The Haunt” from 1969 to sometime in the mid 1990’s, with the “phantom” marks left by a small stage still tinting a section of the building’s floor.

Building connections, sustainable business: Ithaca resources

I’ve had a few folks as me about resources for budding companies and aspiring Tompkins County business owners, so I’d like to make all my readers aware of resources available to them here in the Ithaca area.

The Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce, Ithaca Area Economic Development and Downtown Ithaca Alliance are the big three of Ithaca’s downtown development.

The chamber offers a slew of Workforce Development and Business relocation, expansion and start-up resources and can point entrepreneurs in the right direction when they first arrive or plan on moving a business to Ithaca.

To schedule a business resource screening appointment with the chamber, email Sarah Barden at sbarden@tompkinschamber.org .

Other resources include REV, a start-up business incubator offering mentorship and workspaces for start-ups, the New York Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the  City of Ithaca Economic Development Office.

As for advice, Ricky Tiscareno who I mentioned earlier in this newsletter, had this to say, as an entrepreneur who has helped to run a successful business for the last four years.

“Think about what you’re passionate about, identify that, think about the skills that you have to make that happen, and the ones you don’t have and how you would complement them,” he said. “We were very fortunate in that we had each other, and we could each work different parts of the business. I admittedly don’t have much of a creative side … but [Dennis] is very visionary that way. So if you feel like you’re missing something, either find a partner to compliment that or take it upon yourself to learn.”

That’s about all I’ve got for you today but check your inbox tomorrow for more updates and feel free to reach out to me at jmack@gannett.com regarding this newsletter.
