Good morning and welcome back to the Ithaca Journal’s Daily Briefing ☀️

It’s Monday again so today I’ll be sharing one of my favorite summer snacks that you can try at home.

If you have any Finger Lakes moments you’d like to share, send me your best photos and a short passage to JMack@gannett.com so I can share the love with other readers this Friday.

Without further ado, here’s an update on some New York representation in the Paris Olympics.

Today starting at 6 a.m., the U.S women's Olympic rowing team will have their friends and family rooting for them.

Olivia Coffey of Burdett and Lansing native and Cornell graduate Kyle Dake will be among those competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Coffey, 35, is competing in the women's eight rowing after helping the United States place fourth in the event at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Dake, 33, is wrestling in the men's freestyle 74-kilogram class after winning a bronze medal in the Tokyo Games.

Learn how you can watch a Burdett and Lansing native compete in the 2024 Olympics in this article.

Here’s some news you may have missed this weekend

    • Homeless outreach coordinator position under debate by Common Council: According to the Ithaca Voice , department heads at City Hall have been working with Ithaca City Manager Deb Mohlenhoff to coordinate communications between the organizations, departments and city staff while awaiting approval to hire a formal homeless outreach coordinator.
    • Disrespecting our elders? A total of 150 nursing homes in New York received the lowest overall rating in the latest federal government review of safety, staffing and quality measures. Check out the list here.

Smoothie, Lassi, or a cold brew? You decide

Recently I’ve been on a quest to inject some extra protein and fresh fruit in my family’s diets to help us cut out excess carbs and processed sweets, and that includes my buddy Milo the cat.

I found a great way to do it while still satisfying a sweet tooth. Thanks to a cheap immersion blender I got for about $25 during Amazon’s recent Prime Day, I’ve made us an array of fruit and yogurt smoothies that have really helped keep the heat, and the weight, off.

Take two cups of your favorite (ideally plain Greek) yogurt, add a few cubes of ice, one sliced mango, and a handful of fresh strawberries or blueberries. Blend, then stir in a teaspoon each of sugar, cinnamon and salt. There you have it, your own homemade strawberry mango lassi!

Take a look at this list from Food Network for more smoothie-based ideas that will help keep you cool, much like a cold brew from Brewer’s Kitchen & Taproom on Ithaca’s Dryden Road . Here’s a shot of their burger, truffle fries, and some delicious Juice Bomb IPA, one of the best meals I had last week.
