Without further ado, here’s an update from Tompkins County officials on an outbreak you should know about.

To date, 34 cases of Listeria have been reported as a part of a recent outbreak, including 12 cases in New York State, one of which is in a neighboring county. 33 of the 34 cases have required hospitalization and 2 deaths have occurred.

“The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses,” Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) said in a statement. “This is because some people recover without medical care and are not tested for Listeria.“

The outbreak has been linked to select Boar’s Head Deli Meat products, including various liverwurst, salami, bologna and ham deli meats, as well as a “heat and eat” bacon product, with a full list available on the USDA website.

Learn more about the infected products and the symptoms of Listeria to keep yourself healthy.
