Ph.D. student lands prestigious Gilliam Fellowship
For the first time and from a record number of applicants, a Clemson Ph.D. student has been named a 2024 Gilliam Fellow by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Jakini Kauba, a Ph.D. student in mathematics, and her advisor, Keisha Cook, join the Gilliam cohort of 50 student/advisor pairs selected this year. Cook is an assistant professor in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences in Clemson’s College of Science.
Lander University Plays Host to Dual Enrollment Students
Autumn Lockhart (center), a junior early childhood education and Spanish double major from Chesnee, leads a tour of Lander University’s campus with high school students taking dual enrollment courses at Lander in the 2024-25 academic year. Through funding provided by the State of South Carolina, high school students can take up to six credit hours (two courses) at Lander each semester (Fall and Spring) tuition free. Clemson adds All-American transfer Brook Melnychuk
Clemson softball has officially announced its roster additions for the 2024-25 season, featuring several notable transfers. The new class is highlighted by right-handed pitcher Brook Melnychuk from Louisiana Tech. Melnychuk brings an impressive resume, including being named the ICCAC Pitcher of the Year in 2021 and earning Second Team NJCAA All-American honors the same year. In 2024, Melnychuk posted a 2.77 ERA with 13 wins over 36 appearances and 20 starts. She struck out 67 batters in 124 innings and had a remarkable start to the season, not allowing an earned run in her first 11.2 innings. She finished the season strong, throwing complete games in her final three starts and earning CUSA Pitcher of the Week honors twice. Joining Melnychuk are Reese Basinger, a right-handed pitcher from Winthrop, and Jamison Brockenbrough, an outfielder from Tennessee. Greenville, SC Arena District To Become A Gateway Destination

According to a recent announcement, the Greenville Arena District or GAD (owner and operator of Bon Secours Wellness Arena), has contracted two architectural firms and Gensler Sports for master planning a 15,500-seat sports and entertainment arena. GAD is also in the process of re-imagining the whole district as the gateway into the flourishing city of Greenville, South Carolina, and selected one of the architectural firms, LMN, to oversee the urban design of the arena’s surrounding campus.
