Tips and tricks to get your favorite foods for less. My grocery budget is being stretched thin so I thought I'd update my last Affordable Food Finds article, by adding Grocery Outlet, and some other tips and tricks to the mix.
Philly: Free and Low-Cost Food Resources for Adults and Kids
Philly food resources across the city for adults and kids. As grocery prices increase, more people find they can’t afford the basics. Cereal that used to cost $1–2 is now $3–5 for a smaller box. And don’t get me started on meat and poultry prices.
University City Dining Days Returns and Ends July 28th
Taste the best of 30 West Philly Restaurants July 18th through 28th. University City District’s website announced the return of University City Dining Days from Thursday, July 18th to Sunday, July 28th, 2024. Over 30 restaurants will offer the popular “3 courses, 3 prices” promotions from pre-fixe three-course lunch and dinner menu specials for $20, $30, or $40.” The website added:

Philly Fraud Alert: Fake PPA Text Message Scam
PPA says do not click on the link, go to the PPA website. July 9th The Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) posted a Consumer Fraud Alert on their website warning customers about a “malicious phishing scam where consumers are receiving text messages disguised as coming from the PPA, that falsely informs them they owe money for an unpaid parking ticket. “
Philly’s Eviction Diversion Program Made Permanent and Council Passes Eviction Accountability Bill
Philly’s City Council Leading the Way in Eviction and Housing Reform. In the latest Philly eviction news, City Council voted to make the Eviction Diversion Program (EDP) permanent and passed the Angel Davis Eviction Accountability Bill during hearings from the Council’s Committee on Housing, Neighborhood Development, and the Homeless. The pandemic-era Eviction Diversion Program has saved hundreds of Philly residents from evictions by requiring landlords to participate in eviction mediation with their tenants and attempt to resolve disputes before filing for eviction. EDP housing counselors and volunteer mediators work with tenants and landlords to come to an agreement outside of eviction court.

Philly loves Mommies and shows it in our celebrations and support. Philly is one of the first places I've seenCommunity Baby Showers. We had the pleasure of attending last year's Community Baby Shower at Temple STAR Complex and I'm excited to share the 3rd Annual event, on Saturday, July 13th from 10 am to 1 pm.

A guide and links to Welcome America and other Summer Celebration highlights. Nobody celebrates America's Independence Day like Philly's Welcome America!. I hope you joined some of Welcome America's month-long festivities. From Free Museum Days to Block Parties throughout the City, Juneteenth and Wawa Hoagie Day, Welcome America had something for everyone. The last day is July 4th and ends with a parade and big concert on The Parkway.
Philly Baby Joy Grant Application is Open: $1,000 for Pregnant Moms in Target Areas
Baby Joy guaranteed income pilot program will help 250 pregnant mothers with a $1,000 monthly grant. The Philly Joy Bank pilot is taking applications to give 250 Philly mothers $1,000 guaranteed income during and immediately after pregnancy. According to the Joy Bank website, "In addition to the guaranteed income, program participants will be offered voluntary support such as benefits and financial counseling, home visiting, lactation support, and doulas."

You can play with the ingredients in Greek salads, but the simplicity and purity of the Caprese salad appeals to me. Caprese's main ingredients are: mozzarella, fresh basil, and tomatoes, but the combination is amazing especially if all the ingredients are fresh and authentic.
Wawa Hoagie Day is Giving Away 25,000 Free Hoagies plus Hoagiefest
Historic Wawa Hoagie Day is back as part of the Wawa Welcome America and Hoagiefest. Hoagie Day will start at noon today, Thursday, June 27th at Independence Mall (on Arch Street between 5th and 6th Streets) and they plan to serve 25,000 FREE hoagies. Wawa Hoagie Day is back as part of Wawa Welcome America's 2024 summer celebration season.
Remembering Distrito: A West Philly Memory Brought Back with CookUnity
I recently reviewed CookUnity but I didn’t share how I discovered the food delivery service. I saw an ad with local Iron Chef, and James Beard Award-winning restaurateur, Chef Jose Garces, and I had to try it since I can no longer visit my beloved Distrito in University City (West Philly). Distrito was one of my favorite restaurants, but it closed two years ago.
The Overbrook Night Market is Tonight!
West Philly's favorite night market and food fair is back with 35 food and beverage vendors. The Overbrook Night Market is tonight and they're bringing 35 food and beverage vendors to West Philly for a night of good food, music, and fun for the whole family. Last year, was my first time attending as a volunteer. At the end of my shift, I had BBQ and a tropical snowball. I had a blast seeing all the happy faces chatting and chewing from 61st to 63rd Streets.
