Variety is often regarded as the spice of life, making it a crucial feature of any good restaurant’s menu. For a solid mix of all kinds of classic American cuisine, from BBQ to seafood, The Hippie Hen House in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina is sure to deliver the flavor in every category.

The sandwiches and wraps are a big portion of the menu, taking up half a full page as the ‘That’s a Stack Jack’ section, and with each coming standard with kettle chips as a side. A personal favorite is the Game Cock Maple Hot sandwich, featuring a crispy chicken breast coated in maple hot sauce, cheddar cheese, sweet pickles, and buttermilk ranch aioli on a fresh onion bun for a spicy and sweet finish.

As an alternative to the kettle chips, one can choose to upgrade to fries or coleslaw for a dollar more, and for the indecisive, there is a solid Build Your Own Smokehouse sandwich to truly make BBQ one’s own. Another solid sandwich with great customization options is the Smoked Philly Cheesesteak, which comes with the diner's choice of pulled chicken, ribeye beef pot roast, or pulled pork, alongside lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and American cheese.

Seafood entrees and homestyle meals both fall under the category of ‘The Supreme’s’ at Hippie Hen House, with only a five dollar price difference separating them. With the name on their sign, it is safe to say anything with the words ‘jumbo lump’ in it will be good, especially the Southern Shrimp and Jumbo Lump Scampi, featuring a mix of jumbo shrimp and jumbo lump crab in scampi sauce with garlic mashed potatoes and the vegetable of the day on the side.

For those focused on the homestyle meals, make sure to take advantage of the early bird special from noon to five on Monday to Saturday, exclusive to this portion of the menu. All homestyle meals drop down from $20 to $16.95, a value unbeatable anywhere else on the beach.

I've eaten there twice. It's clean and has a nice atmosphere and the food is good.
