Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas, a $1.35 billion behemoth of the sea, has recently been introduced to the world since its maiden voyage on July 19th.

The ship, boasting nearly 5,700 passengers and a crew of over 2,200, offers an array of amenities designed to cater to multi-generational families on shorter 3- and 4-day itineraries.

However, one particular feature has made some cruise passengers a bit wary.

The ship's top deck, a sun-soaked oasis featuring a pool and other recreational areas, is home to the newest addition: see-through hot tubs.

While the innovative design aims to offer a unique and immersive experience, it has also raised concerns about privacy and comfort.

Bryan James, a cruise ship musician, expressed his reservations about the feature in a recent Instagram post.

"I think see-through hot tubs are the new hip thing on cruise ships," he said. "And I'm not 100 per cent sure how I feel about that. I always felt great comfort getting in to one knowing that none of my body could be seen."

James' candid remarks struck a chord with many other regular cruisers who expressed their disapproval of the transparent tubs.

Social media platforms were flooded with comments from passengers who questioned the practicality and desirability of the feature.

However, some believe the see-through hot tubs may serve a practical purpose. One individual, claiming to have knowledge of cruise ship design, suggested that the feature could deter inappropriate behavior.

"As someone who knows folks who design cruise ships and work in the development stages of ship design… the trend also has to do with them trying to cut down on the below the waterline 'extra curricular activities'," they wrote.

Another potential benefit highlighted by commenters is enhanced safety. The visibility of the hot tub's occupants could make it easier to monitor children and assist those in distress.

While the see-through hot tubs have undoubtedly sparked debate, there is no denying that the topic has been polarizing.

As the cruise industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether this particular trend will become a staple on future vessels or fade away. It really depends how many people are bothered by it.
