A retired military officer who had been struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) tragically died after jumping from the world’s largest cruise ship last month, authorities confirmed.
James Bryan Wright, a 53-year-old veteran, was identified as the passenger who fell from the Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas on May 26, just one day into a week-long Caribbean cruise.
According to news reports, Wright had engaged in a physical altercation with his wife, Tracie Wright, prior to the incident.
"Shortly after the altercation Mr. Wright exited the cabin at which point he made his way to Deck 5 where he entered a secure gated area and proceeded to jump off the ship," the report stated.
The massive cruise ship, with a capacity of nearly 10,000 people, was halted for approximately two hours while crew members conducted a search and rescue operation. Tragically, Wright was recovered but could not be revived.
Wright's obituary paints a portrait of a dedicated and decorated serviceman who spent over three decades in the military.
Beginning his career in the South Carolina Air National Guard in 1988, he held numerous positions and was recognized for his service with multiple Purple Hearts and other honors.
"He had the honor of presenting numerous Purple Hearts and other distinguished decorations to many heroes who served so selflessly to protect the freedoms we all enjoy," the obituary reads.
Tributes poured in for Wright from former colleagues and fellow servicemen who described him as a "wonderful human being" and a "good officer and good friend."
The incident has cast a somber light on the challenges faced by many veterans returning to civilian life. PTSD, a mental health condition triggered by traumatic events, can have devastating consequences.
While the circumstances surrounding Wright's death are specific to his situation, his story underscores the importance of mental health support for those who have served their country.
As the investigation into the incident continues, the tragic loss of James Bryan Wright serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel and the ongoing struggles they may face long after their service ends.
