A luxury superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning following a severe storm, leaving six people unaccounted for.

According to news reports, the 183-foot vessel, named Bayesian, was carrying 22 people, including 12 passengers and 10 crew members, when it capsized in the rough waters.

The incident occurred around 5 AM local time near Porticello, Sicily. According to the Italian coastguard, a violent storm, including a tornado, swept through the area, causing the yacht to sink.

Rescue efforts were immediately launched, resulting in the rescue of 15 people, including the yacht's captain, James Catfield. Sadly, one person was confirmed dead. However, six individuals remain missing, and search operations continue.

Among the rescued passengers are the yacht's owner, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, his wife Nada, and their 18-year-old daughter Hannah. Lynch's lawyer, Christopher Morvilla, was also on board but is currently unaccounted for.

Other notable passengers included Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Lynch's firm Invoke Capital, her one-year-old daughter Sofia, and her partner James Emsley.

Golunski recounted the terrifying ordeal to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, describing how she held her daughter above the water to keep her safe during the chaotic moments.

Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Anne were also passengers on the yacht.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Captain Catfield spoke about the unexpected nature of the storm, stating, "We didn't see it coming."

The rescue mission has been ongoing since the incident, with teams working tirelessly to locate the missing individuals. Updates on the search efforts will be provided as they become available.
