Many cruises out of the U.S. do not require a passport. Closed-loop cruises that start and end at the same United States cruise port only require a birth certificate and photo ID.

But according to recent news reports, passengers won't be able to board a Disney cruise ship with just photocopies of birth certificates.

Disney Cruise Line has announced a change in its documentation requirements for guests boarding their ships.

Effective immediately, all guests must present an original state-issued birth certificate as proof of citizenship. Photocopies or hospital-issued birth certificates will no longer be accepted.

This new policy applies to all guests, regardless of age. However, individuals 16 years of age and older will also be required to present a valid government-issued photo ID.

This additional requirement aligns with standard security protocols implemented by many travel and hospitality businesses.

For guests who have upcoming Disney Cruise Line reservations, the company has sent out an email detailing the new documentation guidelines.

"For round trip sailings departing from the U.S., guests using a birth certificate as citizenship documentation are reminded that only an original state-issued birth certificate is acceptable. Guests 16 years of age and older are also required to present a physical government-issued photo ID. Children 15 years of age and younger will need to present an original state-issued birth certificate but do not need to present a government-issued photo ID. Photocopies of birth certificates will not be accepted," the email stated.

While this change may require additional planning for some guests, it is important to note that it is in line with the ongoing efforts to enhance security and ensure the safety of all passengers and crew members on Disney Cruise Line voyages.

For guests who may need to obtain a new birth certificate, many states offer expedited services for a fee.

It is recommended that guests check with their local vital records office to determine the specific requirements and processing times in their area.
