A tragic incident occurred aboard the MSC Virtuosa cruise ship on Saturday, October 12th, as a passenger fell overboard into the English Channel.

According to news reports, the Maltese-flagged vessel was en route to Southampton from an undisclosed location when the event occurred.

According to authorities, search and rescue teams were alerted immediately and, after an hour-long search, the body of a woman was recovered by the French Navy.

A passenger who witnessed the incident recounted the moment when the ship's captain announced the emergency over the intercom.

"Man overboard, man overboard, man overboard," the captain declared.

The passenger described the announcement as "the loudest thing I've ever heard on the ship."

Following the announcement, the MSC Virtuosa reversed course to assist in the search. The ship's crew worked diligently to support rescue efforts, despite the challenging conditions of the dark sea.

In a statement, MSC Cruises confirmed the tragic loss of a passenger. "We are deeply saddened by this event, and our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time," the company said.

"Out of respect for their privacy, we will not be providing further details."

The incident has prompted renewed attention on passenger safety measures aboard cruise ships.

While the circumstances surrounding the woman's fall remain under investigation, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of the sea.

"Man overboard" is an out to sea term used for crew to take immediate action to someone falling off the ship. Gender has nothing to do with the statement.
