"You Must Never Do This": Carnival Clarifies Stance on Spreading Ashes on a Cruise

Scattering the ashes of a loved one at sea can be a meaningful way to honor their memory, especially for those who had a deep connection to the ocean or a passion for travel.

Carnival Cruise Line offers this unique service, providing a serene and respectful setting for families to bid farewell to their departed loved ones.

According to news reports, there has been some confusion surrounding Carnival's policy on scattering ashes at sea.

Recent online rumors suggested that the cruise line had implemented new restrictions, leading to concerns among potential travelers.

To address these misconceptions, Carnival's Brand Ambassador, John Heald, clarified the company's stance.

"This is absolutely wrong. You must never do this," Heald explained. "It has to be documented."

Carnival's Cruise Ticket Contract outlines the specific procedures for scattering ashes at sea.

While the contract doesn't explicitly mention the practice, it clearly prohibits the discharge of any items into the ocean, including human remains.

To ensure a respectful and legal ceremony, Carnival requires guests to make arrangements in advance.

Heald recommends contacting him at least two or three days before the cruise, providing the ship and cabin number. He will then coordinate with the ship's staff to schedule a suitable time and location.

On the second day of the cruise, guests should visit the Guest Services desk to confirm the details of the ceremony.

It's important to note that scattering ashes at sea can only be performed 12 nautical miles outside of port. This means that it's not possible to scatter ashes directly in a favorite port of call.

The scattering ceremony itself is a private affair, typically involving the guest and up to 12 companions.

They will be escorted to a designated area on the ship, which may be inaccessible to the general public. During this time, guests can say their final goodbyes to their loved one.

After the ceremony, the ship's Captain will provide a certificate detailing the coordinates where the ashes were scattered, serving as a lasting memento of the memorial.

Carnival offers this service free of charge.
