Texas seizes Eagle Pass city park amidst Border Security crackdown

    2024-01-11

The State of Texas - which turned heads last year by stringing barbed wire along its border with New Mexico (that's not a typo) as part of the Border Security push known as "Operation Lone Star" - has now seized a city park along the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass.

The state takeover of the park was confirmed in a statement issued Thursday by the City of Eagle Pass which says it "played no role" in the takeover and its "City Attorney is looking further into this matter."

Posts by journalists on X.com (formerly Twitter) showed the city park to be gated and guarded by armed Texas National Guard troops.

NewsNation's Ali Bradley reports that "all access to the property is limited to state authority only. Border Patrol will be permitted to enter the property to remove their equipment and supplies—Agents will not have access to the area unless there is a medical emergency".

She also posted a statement (see below) from Governor Abbott's office that "Texas is holding the line at our southern border:"
