It's long been known that the "Northeast Cartel" or "Cartel del Noreste" (CDN) operates on both sides of the border between Texas and Mexico - and now they're openly boasting about their presence in Texas through a photo posted to x.com (formerly Twitter) showing its armed members wearing vests displaying the CDN logo along with the words "Operativa Texas" (which translates to "Texas Operation").

(I am not providing a direct link to the photo on x.com because it also includes the disturbing image of a bound, blindfolded individual - likely a member of a rival cartel).

The CDN hides in plain sight in its stronghold of Nuevo Laredo across the RIo Grande from Texas in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. They also drive vehicles displaying their logo there to show who is in charge of their "territory."

In Nuevo Laredo last year the cartel even handed out food baskets bearing its logo as "gifts" to Mexican citizens in an effort to paint themselves in the image of "Robin Hood" amongst the public - despite their involvement in violent crime there.

It's also an open secret that the CDN's illegal operations stretch across the river into the Texas border city of Laredo. In March of 2023, the Laredo Morning Times - citing affidavits filed by the FBI in federal court - reported that the CDN kidnapped Erik Tadeo Ramirez from a Laredo home after he bragged that he had stolen $50,000 from the CDN but did not fear them because he was on U.S. soil.

Two hours after he made that statement armed men abducted him and drove him to Mexico. He has not been seen since.

(The cartels) "absolutely are (setting) the rules of engagement (on the U.S.-Mexico border)" - Jason Owens, U.S. Border Patrol Chief

One person who is keenly aware of the cartels' operations in Texas is Jason Owens. He was Deputy Chief of the Laredo Border Patrol Sector, Chief of the Del Rio Sector, and is now Chief of the entire U.S. Border Patrol.

"Everybody that is bringing (drugs, migrants, and guns) across the border in some form or fashion is connected to or working for the larger cartels," Owens told a U.S. Congressional Committee.

A year ago Texas Department of Public Safety surveillance cameras captured images of CDN gunmen on the Texas side of the Rio Grande in South Texas. -That eventually led to the arrests of five CDN smugglers involved in gun-running operation.

The CDN is one of five major cartels operating along the Mexico-Texas border. The others are the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Gulf Cartel (CDG), Sinaloa Cartel (CDS), and the Juarez Cartel (La Linea).

The CDN, however, is alone among them by brazenly boasting about its operations on the Texas side of the Rio Grande.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has requested the Biden Administration to designate the cartels as "terrorist organizations" and instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to target them and disrupt their operations within the state.

Do you believe enough is being done to battle cartels for control of the Texas Border?
