Some recent arrests by Federal Agents along the Texas and U.S. Southern Borders are raising alarms about the threat of terrorism and violence by migrants.

On August 12, 2024, El Paso Sector Border Patrol Agents arrested Omar Shehada - a Palestinian man found to be on a terrorism watchlist - along with six others who illegally crossed the U.S. border from Mexico.

According to Border Patrol records, Shehada flew from Spain to Colombia, then to Panama and El Salvador before illegally entering the United States from Mexico.

This arrest comes after the arrests of three Palestinians along the Mexican border with California last month.

The New York Post reported that concerning images were found on their phones - including that of a masked man holding an AK-47 rifle.

Meanwhile, in Florida, U.S. Federal Authorities this week reported the arrest and indictment of Hashem Younis Hashem Hnaihen - a 43 year-old Jordanian man - on four counts of threatening to use explosives and one count of destruction of an energy facility.

According to court documents, beginning around June 2024, Hnaihen targeted and attacked businesses in the Orlando area for their perceived support for Israel. Wearing a mask, under the cover of night, prosecutors say Hnaihen smashed the glass front doors of businesses and left behind “Warning Letters.”

“Targeting and attacking businesses for perceived beliefs is unacceptable. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to investigate and federally prosecute those who make violent or hate-based threats and who seek to act on these threats.” - U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg

In his letters, which were addressed to the United States government, prosecutors say Hnaihen laid out a series of political demands, culminating in a threat to “destroy or explode everything here in whole America. Especially the companies and factories that support the racist state of Israel.”

Hnaihen is believed to have caused more than $700,000 in damage to a solar energy production facility in Wedgefield, Florida, and left a "warning letter" threatening to “destroy or explode everything” at an industrial propane gas distribution depot in Orlando.

He is being held without bail pending a criminal trial in U.S. Federal Court.

Should more be done to secure our southern borders?
