Texas Border: Truckloads of Migrants Found

Truckloads of migrants are being discovered along the Texas Border with Mexico during law enforcement operations that often result in as many rescues as arrests.

The latest reported incident occurred on September 4, 2024 in Eagle Pass, according to the following details released to the news media by the Maverick County Sheriff's Department:

A Deputy heard screaming and knocking coming from a tanker-trailer parked at a gas station as she was on patrol shortly before 1:00 AM. When she climbed on top of the tanker to investigate she opened one of the hatches and discovered a large number of migrants inside.

The Sheriff's Department says 26 migrants were found locked inside the tanker trailer. Emergency Medical Services were requested to treat the migrants for possible dehydration after which the sheriff says they were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.

The tanker was seized by Maverick County while an investigation into who is responsible for locking the migrants in its trailer (and abandoning them) continues.

This follows similar incidents reported elsewhere in Texas last month:

Twenty-three migrants were discovered locked inside a box truck abandoned by smugglers as an El Paso Sector Border Patrol Anti-Smuggling Unit disrupted their operation. Agents say - like the Eagle Pass incident - this became a rescue operation as they discovered the migrants had been without food and water for some time.

In another incident - this one reported by the Texas Department of Public Safety - 17 migrants were discovered locked in a hidden compartment inside a box truck smugglers had outfitted to appear to be a "Lowe's" delivery vehicle:

Highway patrol officers who stopped the truck had to use pry bars to free the migrants trapped in a small amount of space for this dangerous smuggling attempt.

The migrants were drenched in sweat, suffering from dehydration, and required medical treatment. Troopers arrested the driver from Mississippi for human smuggling causing serious bodily injury.

In 2022- in what remains the nation's deadliest smuggling attempt - 53 migrants (among them eight children and a pregnant woman) died after being abandoned in the locked trailer of a semi-trailer in San Antonio.

Is enough being done to combat human smuggling operations along our Southern Border?
