Photo/Brian Smith Both Jacksboro varsity basketball teams suffered tough losses to Iowa Park in District 7-3A action Friday, Feb. 2. Summaries of both games follow: Lady Eagles 38, Tigerettes 34 With a playoff spot on the line, the Tigerettes led by three going into the fourth quarter but the Lady Hawks took the lead and held on down the stretch for the win. Three pointers and free throws enabled the hosts to take a 3230 lead with 4:04 to go. Kylie Tullous cut the lead to one. Iowa Park would take its biggest lead at four with under two minutes remaining. Hayden Walker’s nifty wraparound shot again made it a one possession game with 54 seconds to go at 3634. Iowa Park went back up four with 24 seconds to go and the score remained the same down the stretch. This was a battle much like the first meeting. Both teams needed time to get going offensively. Tullous’ basket and free throws put Jacksboro up 4-1 midway through the first. Iowa Park pounded the offensive glass for good shots but to no avail. Both teams went 1-10 shooting in the opening frame keeping the score tied at 4 after one. A Landrie Valenzuela three-pointer and Rylee Mathis free throws put the Purple up 9-5. Iowa Park would go on a 9-2 run to take its first lead at 13-11 late in the first half. A Tullous three-pointer put the Tigerettes up 14-13 but Iowa Park used late free throws to go into the halftime break up 15-14. The lead flip-flopped throughout the third quarter. Jacksboro had its biggest lead at 26-21 courtesy of a basket and three-pointer by Tullous. Jacksboro had its best shooting quarter (4-7) helped by a baskets from Mathis and Brailyn Tullous. Kylie Tullous had 14 points to lead the Tigerettes. Eagles 55, Tigers 54 The Hawks took an 11-point lead into the fourth but a fierce comeback by the visitors made things interesting. Free throws and a dunk by Cannon Valenzuela cut the deficit to six with 5:27 remaining. The Tigers got within 47-43 on baskets from Lando Belcher, Luke Sams and free throws by Wyatt Gavit. Belcher and Valenzuela each converted from outside to tie the game at 51 with 1:20 to go. Valenzuela’s putback and free throws gave the squad a late lead at 54-52. Iowa Park got within one on a free throw. Jacksboro had a chance to take a threepoint lead but missed a pair of free throws with 7.1 seconds to go. Iowa Park was fouled going for the offensive rebound on the second miss and hit both free throws with 5.2 seconds left. Jacksboro was unable to get off a successful shot in the waning seconds to preserve the Hawk win. An 8-0 Iowa Park run in the first quarter gave the squad, which shot 50 percent from the field in the quarter, a 17-9 lead after one. Once again, the Tigers came clawing back with Brayden Rockey’s basket and free throw and a Valenzuela basket cutting the lead to seven. Baskets by Rockey and Eli Jonas and a Valenzuela three-pointer would put the Purple up 22-21. Iowa Park used a late basket to take a 23-22 lead at the half, however. Baskets by Belcher, Jonas and Rockey and free throws from Luke Sams and Valenzuela would account for the Tiger offense in the third. Iowa Park led by as many as 13 in the frame on 7-15 shooting but took the 44-33 lead into the fourth. Valenzuela tossed in 19 points and Belcher 10 for Jacksboro. Jacksboro plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 in Henrietta.
