The warm June has been helping Great Lakes’ waters warm up, especially at beaches. The Sunday wind direction took the warm water away, but not for long. We had a condition called upwelling occur at many Lake Michigan and Lake Huron beaches on Sunday. Upwelling is when a certain wind direction blows the surface water at the beaches out into the open water of a Great Lake. The colder water below gets pulled up to the surface at the beach. This means the water temperature can plunge 20 degrees in just a matter of a few hours.

Beginning Monday, July 1, library officials will be replacing 155 windows at the Carnegie Library, 244 W. Michigan Ave. in downtown Jackson.
