Former Georgia high school football MVP shot to death at hotel
BRASELTON, Ga. — A former Georgia high school football standout was found shot to death in a hotel room on the evening of Sunday, July 7. The Braselton Police Department said officers were dispatched at 5:15 p.m. to The LaQuinta Inn & Suites at 200 Kaival Lane in Braselton, Jackson County, Georgia. When officers arrived, they said they found a man in a hotel room with a gunshot wound to his head.
GBI investigating Athens man found dead in Jackson County
State officials are investigating after an Athens man was found dead in eastern Jackson County recently. A release Friday from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Antowne Shalmar Lay, age 29, was found dead near the intersection of Antioch Church Road and Gus Barnett Road just south of Nicholson. No details about the time the body was discovered or the condition it was in have been released.
Arrest made for Athens man’s murder in Jackson County
An arrest has been made for the murder of 29-year-old Antwone Shalmar Lay of Athens who was shot to death Friday in the parking lot of a church in Jackson County. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced on Monday that they arrested 31-year-old William Austin of Jefferson on charges of murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence.

At the request of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, GBI agents are investigating the death of Antowne Shalmar Lay, age 29, of Athens, GA. Lay was found near the intersection of Antioch Church Road and Gus Barnett Road, in Nicholson, GA. Athens Area Humane Society to host free pet vaccine and microchip clinic
The Athens Area Humane Society will host a free pet vaccine clinic on Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to noon at 1030 Mitchell Bridge Road. The clinic aims to promote pet health, increase the likelihood of lost pets returning home safely, and reduce the relinquishment of family pets to area shelters. The clinic operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to the first 200 pets from households in Clarke, Jackson and Madison counties. Pets aged six weeks or older are eligible for vaccines. All pets will be microchipped and administered a rabies vaccination, dogs will receive a parvo/distemper vaccination, and cats will receive a feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia (FVRCP) vaccination. Frontline flea and tick protection for dogs and cats will be provided, as well as vouchers for free spay/neuter procedures at AAHS’s clinic. Pet food and supplies, such as leashes, collars and toys are available while supplies last.

The Jefferson Woman's Club presented a $1,000 donation to the Cancer Foundation on June 27, marking the fourth consecutive year of monetary donations. The Foundation serves 25 counties in Northeast Georgia, providing financial assistance to eligible patients of all ethnicities afflicted with various types of cancer. Since its founding in 2009, the Cancer Foundation has served thousands of families, including Jackson County patients.
