JACKSON, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — Two years after devastating floods tore through eastern Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear toured the region today, met with those hit hardest, and offered aid along the way.

On this somber day, the people of Jackson reflected on the devastating floods that killed dozens of people, demolished homes, and wiped out entire communities.

    LATEST KENTUCKY NEWS:

“We are here at the two-year anniversary of the worst flood of our lifetime. It took 45 lives—45 children of God, and we’re here first to remember them, to memorialize them, and to make sure that they are never forgotten,” Beshear said.

Despite the ongoing hardships, Beshear praised the community for their resilience and positivity, for refusing to let this disaster dampen their spirits.

“You are still standing. Absolutely nothing can knock you down, and I’m so proud of the work you all have done,” Beshear said.

Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman joined Beshear on his tour across eastern Kentucky.

Their final stop was in Jackson, where Beshear presented city officials with a generous donation to address a crucial need in the community—a check for $6 million.

“Today, I get to announce $6 million from our disaster recovery program. It’s going to fund 20 homes along Highway 30,” Beshear said.

The governor credits the progress of the past two years to the first responders and agencies that have helped people get back on their feet, and he looks forward to what these assistance dollars will do.

“There’s still a lot more work that needs to be done, but I promise you, this isn’t just rebuilding. It’s revitalization. We’re going to work to make sure that those that have been through the worst see and get the very best,” Beshear said.

The eastern region of the state is definitely still in recovery mode, but at least now, it seems like there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
