LORANGER, La — A Lincoln County man who was arrested and faces capital murder and kidnapping charges in Mississippi after a woman and child were found dead, and another child was recovered alive last week was indicted on charges by a Tangipahoa Parish Grand Jury Thursday. Victoria Cox, his accomplice, was also indicted on several charges by the grand jury.

36-year-old Daniel Callihan, was captured in Jackson on Boozier Drive after a chase, according to Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade last Thursday. WBRZ reports he was indicted by a Tangipahoa Parish grand jury on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping of a child and second-degree kidnapping.

Cox was indicted on charges of first-degree murder, accessory after the fact to first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping of a child and second degree kidnapping.

WLBT reports Callihan allegedly killed Callie Brunett in Louisiana, the woman died from multiple stab wounds according to the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner . He killed Brunett’s four-year-old daughter in Mississippi.  Cox was arrested as an accomplice and charged with capital murder and sexual battery according to the Hinds County Jail docket. WDSU in New Orleans reported Callihan was booked into the Rankin County Jail on capital murder and sexual battery charges.

He has since been booked in the Madison County jail under a charge listed as conspiracy by the US Marshall’s Office.

According to court documents, a Federal public defender was appointed for Callihan’s case. His federal charge in Mississippi is for felony kidnapping. A detention and preliminary hearing will be held on June 25 at 2:30 p.m. in the Southern District of Mississippi Court. Callihan is also listed in the Eastern District of Louisiana court system but the court documents in Louisiana are sealed.

    Arrest history in Lincoln County

Callihan had a history of arrests in Lincoln County. The latest arrest was in 2022 but the Lincoln County Grand Jury failed to indict him on the charge of sexual battery. Callihan is in the Lincoln County jail docket two times. He was arrested in 2014 for resisting arrest, no-driver’s license and no insurance. The man was arrested in December 2022 on charges of sexual battery .

A warrant was issued for his sexual battery arrest in June 2022. Rushing said Callihan bounced around making him hard to find. He was booked into the Lincoln County jail as homeless.

“He was arrested in Jackson then. He had been staying there,” Rushing said. “It was presented to grand jury and grand jury no billed it meaning there was not enough to indict him for it. It was fully investigated and we even had his sister (Dixie Hemphill) testify in grand jury. We did our part in that.”
