JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – This week, we’re spotlighting the Genesis and Light Center as they wrap up the last week of summer camp.

“It’s the type of environment where you can have fun and you don’t have to worry about people messing with you or bullying you,” said Paris Cohen.

Kids from kindergarten through 9th grade had the chance to participate in various activities.

Paris is even playing football again. “At my old school, I used to play football with the other boys because the other girls didn’t want to play football.”

Albert Wilson, Founder of the Genesis and Light Center in Jackson says youth who participate in summer camp learn how to build character, gain conflict resolutions skills and it can keeps kids safe.

“Our students are going through a lot differently than our traditional students would decades ago, so we have to shift and mold our learning process to our kids,” said Gary Wynter, ELA teacher at JPS Powell Middle school. This is his second year teaching summer school at the Genesis and Light Center.

“Toward the end of summer, they are more confident. They are prepared and able to resist some of those bullying that may have taken place at school. Those who were bullying, we deal with that so they don’t bully anyone when they go to school,” said Wilson.

The Genesis and Light Center also launched a Youth Apprenticeship Program this year for ages 16-24.

“We’re giving them a positive place where they can be,” Wilson said.
