National Weather Service still warns of flash flooding threat

BROOKHAVEN — The National Weather Service in Jackson warns southwest Mississippi the threat of flash flooding continues today. Flash flood threats have persisted for a week due to daily showers and thunderstorms and the potential for heavy rainfall.

NWS Jackson warns of a slight threat of flash flooding in the event of localized heavy rainfall. Between 1-3 inches of rain could fall in a short duration leading to localized flash flooding in urban and low lying areas.

Lincoln County saw measurable rainfall again Thursday bringing the rain streak to eight consecutive days of rainfall. The longest streak of measurable rainfall came in June, 1983 with 13 straight days of rainfall ending on June 27. If the forecasts hold true, the July 2024 streak of rainy days could end up in the top 10. The streak has to reach 9 to tie records set in 2004 and 1957.

There is a 70 percent chance of rain Friday mostly in the afternoon.

Saturday has a 90 percent chance of showers, Sunday has an 80 percent chance of showers and thunder storms and Monday has a 60 percent chance of showers.

Rain chances will fall a little bit next Tuesday to a 50 percent chance. Wednesday and Thursday will drop to 40 and 30 percent chances of rain as well.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there are not current tropical disturbances nor forecasted disturbances for the next seven days.
